Information You Might Find Useful

kimmosc

Like you, I have been overwhelmed by the events of the past few weeks. People I know have gotten sick, a few have passed away. I'm fortunate - so far my family and I are healthy, and I remain employed. But millions of people have lost their jobs, or their businesses, and many fear they will soon lose their homes.  Below I have tried to compile as much information as possible that I think might be useful to you. If you have questions about anything not addressed here, please don't hesitate to email me: kim@votekim.nyc If you need to talk to someone, you can call 888-NYC-WELL (888-692-9355), text ‘WELL’ to 65173 or visit NYC.gov/nycwell to speak with a trained mental health counselor. What about my rent? Last week Governor Cuomo signed an Executive Order halting all evictions in the state for 90 days, but for many people, the rent is still due on April 1st. There is currently a bill (S.8125A) in the NY State Senate sponsored by Sen. Gianaris that would suspend rent for residential and certain small business tenants who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is imperative that the NY state legislature pass this bill and that Governor Cuomo sign it. You can find your State Senator's contact information here: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator For more information on the eviction moratorium, visit the NYC Right to Counsel website here: https://www.righttocounselnyc.org/ How Can We Help Small Businesses? There is no question that all local businesses are hurting. S.8125 would alleviate some of the burden by suspending rent for small businesses, but many have seen an almost total reduction in revenue due to the shutdown. You can help support our local restaurants and bars by ordering delivery or takeout. Check out this list of great local businesses that could use your help. You can donate to: Restaurant Workers Community Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund UNITE HERE Education and Support Fund There are also local businesses here on the Upper East Side that have their own GoFundMe sites: Trinity Pub's Beloved Bar Staff East End Bar & Grill Staff Aid CitiFloral of Yorkville Mellow Yellow Coffee and Vibes Brady's Covid 19 Employee Support Fund What About Voting? Just moments ago Governor Cuomo moved the presidential primary date to June 23rd, to coincide with the state and federal primaries.

Senator Alessandra Biaggi currently sponsors a bill (S.8015A) that would allow anyone in the state to request an absentee ballot due to the pandemic. I would highly recommend applying for an absentee ballot. You can download the form HERE. In Spanish. As soon as I learn anything about the upcoming elections, I'll be sure to let you know.

The Census One very important thing you can do while you're home is to fill out the census online! The results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year. They also determine how many seats in Congress each state gets. With the federal government temporarily halting the door to door census program due to COVID-19 concerns, it's more important than ever that we fill out the census. Right now, as hard as it is, the best thing most of us can do is exactly what we've been doing: STAY HOME. It's the best way to protect the most vulnerable in our city, especially the doctors and nurses who have been working around the clock to save lives.
